The law in Australia
- Is sports betting legal in Australia?
- Yes. Online sportsbooks need a licence from ACMA, and betting with one is legal.
- How old do you have to be?
- 18 to bet with a licensed operator in Australia.
- Who regulates it?
- ACMA, with sportsbooks licensed by the Northern Territory Wagering Commission, which publishes the list of licensed operators.
- What's different about Australia?
- Online betting is legal with a licensed bookmaker, but online in-play betting isn't: live bets can only be placed by phone. Since June 2024, sportsbooks can't take credit cards or crypto, and every licensed book must honour the BetStop self-exclusion register. Australia's Betr sportsbook is a different company from the US Betr Picks app.
