How it works

Add up each outcome's implied probability. Anything above 100% is the book's margin (overround). Hold converts that into the share of handle the book keeps: 1 − 1 / total. Shopping the same bet across books is the simplest way to pay less of it.

Questions

What is hold?

The share of all money bet on a market that the book expects to keep if action is balanced. A -110 / -110 line has a 4.55% hold.

What's a normal hold on player props?

Main markets like spreads usually hold about 4 to 5%. Player props often hold more, 7 to 10% is common, and some alternate lines much more. Lower is better for you.

Hold vs. vig vs. overround?

Overround is how far the implied probabilities exceed 100% (4.76% at -110 / -110). Hold is the bookmaker's expected keep as a share of handle (4.55%). People say vig or juice for either.

Can I use it for three-way markets?

Yes. Fill in the third outcome for soccer's win / draw / win, or any market with three results.
